Solubility of Bacterial Cellulose in LiCl/DMAc Solvent System

Activated bacterial cellulose can dissolve in LiC1/DMAc solvent system. The article studied the influences of different activating conditions on the dissolubility of bacterial cellulose (BC),such as the concentration of 1,2-ethylenediamine,activating time and temperature,as well as the influences of dissolving conditions, like the concentration of LiC1,agitating time and temperature. It discussed the dissolving mechanism of BC in LiC1/DMAc solvent system, and analyzed the infrared spectra of the original and regenerated BC. The results showed that BC could dissolve in LiC1/DMAc solvent system after activated by ethylene diamine. But the dissolubility reduced if the concentration of ethylene diamine exceeded 10%. Agitating temperature and extending of activating time had little effect on the solubility of BC. Contrarily, high agitating temperature would darken the color of BC solution. BC couldnt dissolve completely when concentration of LiC1 was lower than 8% and higher than 10%,or at a lower temperature. While the temperature reached 80℃,BC could dissolve in 8% LiC1/DMAc solvent system completely. Though, extending agitating time can improve the solubility of BC,it was better to choose three hours stirring. Therefore the optimum activating conditions were: 10% ethylene diamine, room temperature and 90 minutes activation. The optimum dissolving conditions of BC in LiC1/DMAc solvent system were: 10% LiCl,dissolving at 80℃,agitating for three hours. Whats more,in LiC1/DMAc solvent system, bacterial cellulose only swollen when heated and changed into transparent solution when it was cooled to room temperature.
