Effect of Disc Chipper Settings and Wood Properties on the Chip Size Distribution

Stem wood and harvesting residues, which currently do not have industrial applications, are now useful sources of biomass. The latter is mainly burnt in automatic wood boilers. Three different engines can transform these residues into wood chips, i.e., the disc chipper, the drum chipper and the cone-screw wood chunker. The main purpose of this study is to understand the wood chipping laws in disc chipper. Cutting angle, feed per tooth, cutting speed, wood species properties and the moisture content are among the most important factors in the chip formation process and its size distribution. Our results were similar with both fir and oak wood. The effects of the factors tested on the chip size distribution were also in tune with the literature.Further there is a need to analyse the issue of the configuration and the positioning of the cutting parts, such as the gap between cutting edge and the anvil, the position of the anvil in relation to the disc shaft and the feeding direction.
