Modified Timber for Window Construction Investigations of the Machinability

The commercialisation of modified timber for window constructions has been studied in Europe last year. The properties of domestic timber like pine and beech or fast growing wood like Radiata pine are changed by special treatments towards tropical hard wood. In this study the influence of the modified properties on the machinability during the window production was investigated. The tests have been carried out with Accoya?, Belmadur? and Thermo beech at the Leitz Technology Centre on typical machining operations for the window production. Besides the machining quality, cutting forces and tool wear have been evaluated, as well. The results were incorporated in the certification process of the above mentioned timber for window constructions.
