The development of energy saving technology in wood crushing

The object of this study is to develop the energy saving technology in wood crushing. Sugi(Cryptomeria japonica) lumber was used to examine the effects of heat treatment. The power consumption during chipping heat treated (steamed or hot-watered) specimen compared with that during chipping untreated specimen (green or dried) using a disk chipper. The heat treated condition was 90 degree and 18 hours. In addition, in order to clarify the energy saving effect of heat treatment with different type of crushing mechanism, untreated specimen or hot-water treated specimen was crushed using a single-axis shearing type crusher. After crushing, the particle size distribution of obtained chips was measured. As a result, the power consumptions during chipping steamed or hot-water treated specimen were 10% lower than those during chipping untreated specimen. This difference between the chipping energy of untreated and treated was significant with significance level p=0.05.Using a single-axis shearing type crusher, the power consumption of hot-water treated specimen were 6% lower than that of untreated specimen. Softening by heat treatment made reduction of power consumption. In conclusion, heat treatment of lumber by surplus heat is effective to reduce energy consumption of crushing process.
