Sawing and Crushing Properties of Oil Palm Trunks
Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.)is cultivated at large plantations in tropical countries, especially in South Asia, in order to squeeze oil from its fruits. The plantation cycle of oil palm is 25-30 years since the yield of the fruits decreases after 25-30 years old. However a huge number of oil palm trees are fallen down, almost all the trunks are bucked and are left in plantations without utilizing. Although the utilization of oil palm trunk is strongly requested in Southeast Asia, few studies on the machinability of oil palm trunk have been carried out. In this study, the sawing and crushing properties of oil palm trunks are examined to clarify the machinability of oil palm trunks. The oil palm trunks from a plantation in the Peninsula Malaysia were used in this study. Their density was 0.85-1.03 g/cm3 in green condition and their average moisture content was 286.7%. The parallel sawing force of the oil palm trunks was 51-92 N and was less than that of sugi (82-144 N) and of red meranti (113-210 N). The net power consumption of oil palm in sawing was 5.1-8.7 k W and was almost same level or less than that of sugi. The sawing accuracy (unevenness in the sawn board thickness) of oil palm was poorer than those of sugi and red meranti. These results indicate oil palm trunks were easier to saw although its sawing accuracy was poor. The net average power consumptions of oil palm in crushing were 2.3 kW with a crusher and 9.1 kW with a disk chipper. These values were almost same or slightly less than those of sugi and indicated oil palm trunks were easier to crush.
