An optimum approach to processing medium and low grade bauxite effectively & economically

Over 98% of bauxite in China is diaspore bauxite. The explored bauxite resource is about 3 billion tons, more than 60% of which is medium and low grade bauxite (A/S=4~6). The annual alumina capacity of Chinese established and establishing refineries processing domestic bauxite is about 32.5 million tons. 90% of these refineries adopt Bayer process and their annual demand of medium or higher grade bauxite (A/S≥5 5) is 74 million tons. However, the explored basic reserve of bauxite (A/S≥5) is about 530 million tons which will only last for about 9 years. Supposing bauxites A/S is 5, the alumina recoveries of Bayer process and dressing-Bayer process are only 69% and 65%~67% respectively, and the alumina recovery of serial combination process can be more than 93%. However, the energy consumption of traditional serial combination process is much higher, which is 21~25 GJ/t-Al2O3 and 1.75~1.9 times of that of Bayer process and 1.8~2 times of that of dressing-Bayer process. If the neo-serial combination process with simplified flow and dry sintering process is taken, the energy consumption would reduce to less than 20.5 GJ/t-Al2O3, making its production cost lower than that of Bayer process and dressing-Bayer process. Therefore, the dry sintering neo-serial combination process is an optimizing approach to processing medium and low grade bauxite effectively and economically.
