The effects of slotted anodes on aluminum reduction cell performance
Aluminum reduction cells may show improved performance by the use of anodes with slots (or grooves) in their horizontal reaction face. Gas bubbles that form under the anode during electrolysis produce a variable and significant voltage drop and the release of these bubbles is a source of cell disturbances and instability. Slots can reduce average bubble layer coverage, resulting in reduced cell resistance and lower cell instability. Slotted anodes have the potential to reduce gas bubble voltage drop, reduce instability due to gas bubble release and increase cell current efficiency. However, not every application of slotted anodes has resulted in cell performance improvement. Some trials of these anodes have produced very negative results. The advantages and disadvantages of slotted anodes are examined.
