IN VITRO AND IN VIVO IMMUNE STIMULATING EFFECTS OF A POLYSACCHARIDE FROM POTENTILLA ANSERINA ROOT (JUE MA)

Potentilla Anserina polysaccharide (PAP) was studied to investigate its stimulating effects in vitro or in vivo. The in vitro investigation demonstrated that PAP enhanced splenocyte proliferation and was associated with an increase in NO production. The in vivo investigation demonstrated that intraperitoneal administration of PAP was able to overcome cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppression and siginificantly raised glutathione level, thymus and spleen indices, and decreased malondialdehyde level in a dose-dependent manner in mice. The results demonstrate that PAP might play an important role in modulation of an immunological system which will lead to the exploration for PAP as a strong potential immunostimulant in food and pharmaceutical fields.
