PARALYSIS OF THE HORSE
Paralysis is a disorder causing the horse to lie down and be unable to get up. This diagnosis includes several diseases in Western veterinary medicine. A major cause of paralysis is injury of the abdominal, spinal and hindquarter muscles due to exogenous forces applying extreme traction. This trauma results in concussion and contusion of the lower back, which causes severe pain and paralysis. The incidence of this type of paralysis is about one percent. Secondly, paralytic myoglobinuria can arise due to excessive work causing fatigue, and feeding of a single feed source that contains high carbohydrate levels. The incidence of this type of paralysis is about two to three percent.
