FRAGMENTATION AND VULNERABILITY OF THE 120mm IM HE-T TANK AMMUNITION
Nammo and General Dynamics-OTS have jointly developed a fully IM compliant high explosive tank ammunition round named 120mm IM HE-T. The 120mm IM HE-t (Insensitive Munitions High Explosive with Tracer) is a full-bore round that combines low-cost insensitive energetic materials with an innovative venting design. The fragmentation of the shell body, when filled with PAX-48 melt-pour explosive having IM properties, was closely studied. The fragment recovery was performed during winter time, using snow to slow down and capture the fragments. Nearly 100% of the shell body weight was recovered. Over 5 thousand fragments were counted and weighed. Over 3000 lethal fragments were recovered from one single 120mm IM HE-T round. The Split-X simulation code from Numerics GmbH was used to study the fragmentation. a good correlation was found between the experimental data and the simulation results. The fragment velocities and directions were extracted from the simulation code, and used to calculate the vulnerability for different defined scenarios. This endeavor provided a good understanding of the fragmentation pattern and the lethality of the 120mM IM HE-T ammunition, without firing a single round. This gave considerable savings in time and costs.
