Facile Electrosyntheses of Conducting Copolymers with Tunable Fluorescence Properties

Copolymerization is a facile and effective approach to tune and improve the properties of final copolymers, especially for conducting copolymers based on novel monomers. This paper reviews the facile electrosyntheses of conducting copolymers with good light emitting properties based on benzanthrone and thiophene/3-methylthiophene, o-dihydroxybenzene and 3-methylthiophene, 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene and 3-methylthiophene, fluorene and 3-methylthiophene, 9,9-dioctylfluorene and thiophene, 5-cyanoindole and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene, pyrene and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene, dibenzofuran and 3-methylthiophene. All the as-formed copolymer films exhibited excellent electrochemical properties, good mechanical properties, high thermal stability, and relatively high electrical conductivities, which were intermediate between those of corresponding homopolymers but significantly different from those of compositions and blends. Furthermore, all the obtained copolymers displayed remarkable fluorescence properties, which could be easily tuned via changing the feed ratios of monomers, applying different oxidation potentials, controlling the total charge passed through the cell during the polymerization process, or changing the doping levels of the copolymer films. All the results indicated that these resultant copolymers may find potential applications in polymer light-emitting diodes.
