DEVELOPMENT OF NEW MATERIALS OF SOLID-OXIDE FUEL CELLS FOR ENERGY CONVERSION THROUGH BENEFICIAL INTERFACIAL REACTION

We propose a new way to develop high-performance cathodes for IT-SOFCs utilizing the interfacial reactions. SrCoOx (SC) was selected as the starting electrode materials, which takes a vacancy-ordered 2H BaNiO3-type structure and shows negligible ionic conductivity and low electrical conductivity. Phase reactions between SC and Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9 (SDC) happened at 900 ℃ or higher, resulting in the incorporation of Sm and Ce into its lattice structure. This promoted the phase transition to a cubic perovskite and led to substantial increase in the electrical conductivity and oxygen mobility of the electrode. By utilizing such phase reactions, the SC+SDC composite was developed into a high performance electrode with a low area specific resistance of 0.08 兦 cm2 at 650 ℃. An anode-supported cell with such electrode delivered a peak power density of 795 mW cm-2 at 600 ℃. Furthermore, through an infiltration method, we impregnated SrCoOx into a scaffold of porous SDC, with the formation of SDC-SC composite electrode. After the firing at high temperature, interfacial reaction between SDC and SC was happened and formed a new phase covering the SDC scaffold with high electronic conductivity and oxygen ionic conductivity, as a result, a new electrode with high electrochemical activity and similar TEC to the electrolyte was developed. On the other hand, we also applied a protonic conducting material of BaZr0.4Ce0.4Y0.2O3 (BZCY4) as the ionic conducting phase of the electrode, and SDC as the electrolyte, through the interfacial reaction at high temperature an interfacial layer was formed, which could conduct both oxygen ion and proton but nor electron, as a result, a new fuel cell configuration with high OCV (1.02V at 600 ℃) and high power output (~ 650 mW cm-2 at 600 ℃) was developed. It thus introduces a new way for developing new high-performance SOFC system.
