Investigations on High Speed Electroerosion Machining of Forged Carbon Steel

Recently, high speed electroerosion machining (HSEM)technology has been proven and widely applied as a high efficient process, especially for difficult-tocut materials. In order to increase the efficiency during high-speed rough machining forged carbon steel work-pieces, HSEM technology was assessed and investigated in the 2nd section of this paper. Machining parameters (peak current, pulse on time, pulse off time, grain size of graphite electrode and concentration of copper in graphite matrix electrode)were studied and optimized through a series of experiments. The relationship between machining parameters and material removal rate (MRR), heat affect zone (HAZ) and wear ratio of tool were also analyzed respectively. Under the optimum process window, near 10, 000 mmVmin of MRR and below 3% of wear ratio of tool were achieved.
