Preparation and Characterization of Novel Si-containing Ceramic Film on Pure Titanium by Plasma Electrolytic Ozidation
Commercially pure titanium and some titanium alloys including Ti6A14V have been widely used in the manufacture of dental and orthopedic implants by virtue of their excellent biocompatibility. However, titanium and its thin naturally formed oxide film are known to be bio-inert 1, therefore, many technologies have been proposed to activate the surface biologically 2-5. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a new surface technology for producing ceramic oxide films on metals such as Al, Mg, and Ti 6. The PEO film, which has a porous surface structure, provides spaces for anchoring bone cells and bone tissue ingrowths which produce firm interlocking at the bone/implant interface and prevents implantation failure 7-9.
