Lessons from Wenchuan 5.12 for Building Seismic Resilience in China
The Wenchuan 5. 12 Earthquake presents two challenges-reconstruction of the (devastated areas and building adequate seismic resistance into the rest of China. It is the second challenge which is the focus of this paper. Observations on successes and failures of structural performance in Wenchuan 5. 12 are used to devise effective retrofitting for seismic resilience in the rest of PR China. A useful guide has been developed for schools in Japan for identifying the need for, and methods of, retrofitting 1.A Structural Seismic Performance Index is used to determine vulnerability and to identify retrofitting requirements. It is based on strength, ductility, structural balance (layout) and age.
