Fiber Sensing Research on Crack Detection in the Core-Wall Base of Yele Dam
The dam of Yele Hydropower Station is the highest asphalt concrete core wall rock-fill dam in Asia. Owing to its complicated geologic conditions and high earthquake intensity, observation of cracks and deformation in the core wall’s foundation stands at an especially important place. Therefore, fiber sensor is introduced, for the first time, to detect the possible crack. Combining with the actual application of sensing fiber in Yele project, research on fields such as fiber sensing test for steel reinforced concrete and on effect of environmental factor on fiber sensing is carried on thoughtfully. The results are applied in Yele project, and the sensing fiber successfully detected the occurrence of micro-crack, which proved that fiber sensor played a very important role in quality control of the project and can meet the requirement of detecting crack well. Such results may serve as reference for other similar projects.
