New Horizons of EPM—Environmental Technology
It is well known that environmental issues including the global warming become serious year by year and we have to make challenge to establish sustainable society. In this study, some examples of EPM application to environmental technology undertaken by our group will be introduced. The first example is an advanced Al-recycling system composed of (1) high speed coagulation of fine inclusion particles in molten Al scrap by strong electromagnetic stirring, (2) electromagnetic separation of inclusion from molten Al scrap with AC magnetic field, (3) fabrication of high strength Al screw to replace iron screw used for Al wrought products. The second example is a new electromagnetic melting of coal fly ash generated from thermal power plant, which realizes a high efficiency melting of fly ash by the help of electrical conductive susceptor and homogeneous glasses with low environmental burdens. Final example is the prevention of scale deposition on water pipe by an electromagnetic treatment of which mechanism is proposed based on the change in zeta potential of suspended fine particles with a weak AC magnetic field at specific frequency.
