A Literature Study on the Construction Process and Style Characteristics of Dongnimmun Gate in Korean Modern Architecture
This paper aims at understanding the historical circumstances under which Dongnimmun Gate (Independence Arch) was established at 1897, and the costruction process and design matters thereof based on relevant literature, especially 『Dr. Seo Jae-pils Autobiography』 ,etc. According to analysis, it reveals that Dongnimmun Gate was completed with the basic plan formulated by Seo Jae-pil, the execution blueprint drawn by the Russian S. Sabatin,and the construction execution led by Artisan Sim Ui-seok. And, its composition was found to well reflect the quest of King Gojong and the pro-American reformist group for modernization. In particular,although Dongnimmun was modeled after Napoleon Is Arch of Triumph, its structure and details were constructed with Chosuns traditional methods. Added to it was the spirit of the royalist nationalism, the cause embraced by King Gojong and the proAmerican reformist group.
