From Space to Place:New Downtown Revitalization Design Approaches in Winter Cities

Public space design principles in most of Chinese cities are similar from North to South without considering climate variation. This results in a lot of open spaces changing into useless spaces in winter season in winter caities because of severe climate conditions. It is important to recognize that winter-induced discomforts exist and they must be acknowledged in public SPACE design to create really public PLACE for people. This paper discussed public space focusing on three aspects: protection, comfort and enjoyment which are essential for place-making in winter cities. Shenyang city of China has been taken as a case study to present the place-making strategies. Also winter oriented public place-making prototype is proposed at last.
