Investigation of mineral composition of oil shale
The goal of this paper is study mineral composition of oil shale which comes from different region and layer in one region. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transforms Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to analyze these samples. DRIFTS results indicated that most of the kerogen is in aliphatic hydrocarbon form and the peak of hydrocarbon is nearly disappeared after being oxidated . XRD and DRIFTS showed good agreement in identifying the presence of minerals such as quartz, muscovite ,clay and carbonate. According to XRD, LongKou and ChangChun oil shale contain a great deal of carbonate which reach to 12.9% and 11.7%( CO2%) while the content of others is lower(<6%) . Especially, in FuShun oil shale ,the content is below 3%. Kaolinite is found in FuShun oil shale while muscovite is only found in HuaDian oil shale. Hydrogen peroxide is used as the oxidant to eliminate the influence of organic in TGA. As the decomposition temperature of oil shale minerals lay in different region, content of some minerals could be calculated. The mineral composition of oil shale in different region is different with each other. Samples from one region but from different layer have similar minerals. Compared with the XRD analysis, result of chemical method is accordance with TGA on carbonate content. Therefore, using XRD only to analyze oil shale minerals exist the defect.
