Highly Tunable Polymer-Mediated Colloidal Crystals

It is highly desirable to fabricate colloidal crystals with stable tunable crystalline structures which could serve as photonic band gap materials with high tunability of the stop band 1. Various techniques, such as dip coating, electrochemical growth, self-assembly between electrodes, and evaporation, have been used to fabricate large colloidal crystals of certain structure with fewer defects. But all the methods mentioned above cannot control the first layer to form desired tunable structures. In monodisperse colloidal systems, only the close-packed or face-centered-cubic (FCC) structures can be formed on solid substrates 2. In this work, a novel self-assembly method will be experimentally reported for achieving tunable crystalline structures.
