Study on Anaerobic Degradation Process of Municipal Solid Waste Landfill by Laboratory Simulation

Sanitary landfill is the primary method to disposal municipal solid waste (MSW) in China for many advantages, such as technology credibility, low expense, large handling capacity, and so on. The purpose of this paper is to study the general process of landfill degradation of MSW organic fraction. A laboratory simulation was adopted to study the process and interrelations of temperature, Ph, Eh, landfill gas (LFG) production rate, LFG composition in 223 days. The results of the experiment indicate that the process of MSW degradation can be divided into four stages in the 223 days: transition stage (1-5d), acidification stage (6-150d), methane production stage (151-202d) and relative stable stage (203d-). Acidification stage is the limiting speed stage of MSW degradation, because anaerobic bacterium needs a long time to conform environment. The peak of LFG production for MSW, which owns high water and high organic contents, occurs quickly but holds for a short time. LFG production process is discontinuous, because it is affected by the concentration of substrates, the number and activity of methane production bacterium.
