THE LAYOUT ARRANGEMENT FEATURES FOR WATER AREAS OF PORT ON SILTY COAST
From the engineering viewpoint of sediment transportation, it is suggested that sea coast with median sediment particle size in the range of 0.03mm ≤d50 ≤0.10mm be defined as silty coast. Silty coast is generaly with the sediment that features easy incipient motion, quick settling and rapid consolidation. These features of the sediment have determined the characteristics of siltation in the port constructed on silty coast. The near-shore areas closely related with port engineering can be classified into three types: silted coast, eroded coast and dynamic balanced coast. Even at the same location, the topographical characteristics of shore will change with the variation of environmental factors. The main impact factors are the variation of external sources of silt and the water dynamic conditions. The sedimentation of a silty coast is of features different from the muddy coast and sandy coast. Based on the features of sedimentation in the port on silty coast and the practical experiences in the operation of this type of port, the main considerations for the design of the layout arrangement for water area of a port on silty coast are presented in the paper. According to the situations of several constructed ports, discussions are directed to the layout arrangements suitable for silty coast, which include dredged-in arrangement, near-shore arrangement and offshore island arrangement. The essential principles, which should be followed for the water area layout arrangement on a silty coast, are also proposed.
