Mirages and Realities: Transformations in a Peri-Urban Settlement of Hyderabad
The process of globalisation has been impacting the growth of Hyderabad for the last 25 years. But the intensity and extent has been escalating at an unprecedented scale with the peri-urban continuously receding with concomitant transformation of land and people. The general concern of various studies on the peri-urban includes urban-supporting agricultural activity, waste-water reusing, environmental consequences. This paper focuses on the implications of globalisation for the residents of Shamshabad, a settlement in the peri-urban of Hyderabad and with great geographical proximity to the international airport. Land and residents of this settlement are examined in the light of existing and emerging government policies, resilience to exploitative forces, responses to development opportunities. The main objective is to analyse the livelihood changes and potential for improved living standards.
