The Effects of Precursor Phase and Concentration on Morphology and Thermal Stability of Titania Nanotubes with Hydrothermal Method
Recently titania nanotubes(TNT) with high specific surface area, ion-changeable ability,and photocatalytic ability has attracted much attention for extensive applications. In this paper, TNTs were hydrothermally synthesized from titania nanoparticles as precursors under four different concentration and characterized by TEM, XRD, BET and EDS. Commercial titania nanoparticles Degussa P25 (70% anatase, 30% rutile) and rutile-phase titania nanoparticles (P25 sintered at 1000 ℃ for 0.5 hour) were employed as precursors with the same particle size. Without heat treatment,the TNT from P25 were amorphous with 20nm diameter and 100nm~500nm length while those from rutile-phase contained 13.9% anstase with 10nm diameter and 300nm~500nm length.The former had two times large diameter and wide length range than latter. After sintered at 450 ℃for 1 hour, the former were pure anatase while latter consisted of 9.1% anatase and 90.9% rutile. It was found that increasing P25 concentration from 0.04M, 0.1M, 0.3M to 0.5M resulted in longer TiNTs ranged from 100nm~300nm (0.04M) to 400nm~500nm(0.5M). To investigate thermal stability, TiNTs were sintered at three different temperature in air for 1 hour respectively. Sintered at 400 ℃, TiNTs kept tube morphology well with 261.6 m 2 ·g -1 BET surface area. When temperature increased to 450 ℃, most of TiNTs from both precursors were destroyed and changed to nanorods with rapid decreased BET surface area 21.8 m 2 ·g -1 and 72.7 m 2 ·g -1 respectively, while up to 550 ℃,all TNTs were destroyed.
