Effect of Catalyst on Densification of Carbon/carbon Composites by Impregnation

When coal—tar pitch is used as a matrix precursor of carbon/carbon (C/C) composites, improving carbonization yield and decreasing the closed porosity are key factors. In this paper, the C/C composites fabricated from activated preforms by solution of nickel nitrate and parent preforms were compared by apparent densities and microstructures from experiments. The results show that the nickel reduced from nickel nitrate during carbonization of composite can leads to (1) the higher densification efficiency, (2) the more ordered and denser structure of matrix, (3) the well-bonded interface between reinforcing carbon fibers and matrix, (4) the lower amount of closed porosity.
