HYGROTHERMAL ANALYSIS ON THE USE OF INTERNAL THERMAL INSULATION SYSTEMS IN PORTUGUESE RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS

In Portugal, the external thermal insulation systems(ETIS) are nowadays a current technical solution inresidential buildings, contrasting with the rarely usedinternal thermal insulation systems (IT IS).In this paper, a quantitative analysis on IT IS is donebased on three hygrothermal fa(c)ade requirements:interstitial condensations, thermal bridges, andtemperature variations across the external wall.Computer simulation was used as research tool. Theselected software applications were in compliancewith the available European standards, particularlyfor the interstitial condensations and thermal bridges. The effect of distinct external climate conditions wasevaluated, taking also into account the typical indoorhygrothermal characteristics of Portugueseresidential buildings, namely temperature andventilation rate. The results of this study quantitavely shows, for theanalised hygrothermal requirements, that the ITISoption should not be disregarded at design stage, provided that some proper measures are guaranteed.

Internal thermal insulation systems hygrothermal requirements residential buildings sustainability.
