THE OXIDATION BEHAVIORS OF PSZ/Ni MATERIAL SYSTEM
PSZ/Ni composites were prepared by powder metallurgy. Non-isothermal oxidation behaviors of the Ni existed in composite were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) from 20 to 1200℃. The results showed that oxidation weight gain fractions increase with increasing zirconia contents in composite. The reasons can be attributed to several reasons. On the one hand, PSZ was good oxygen conductor, which allow rapid oxygen transport. The metallic oxidation in ceramic-rich composites is controlled by the oxygen inward diffusion and the nickel diffusion in NiO. On the other hand, the presence of numerous metal-ceramic interfaces in the composite samples provided short circuit paths for oxygen diffusion. Finally, Many interconnected microcracks developed in the PSZ-rich composite sample because of the high Pilling-Bedworth relationship between Ni and NiO. So, the rapid diffusivity of oxygen through PSZ, with an increased metallic surface area available through the dispersion of Ni (PSZ) in the PSZ (Ni) matrix, increased the oxidation of the metallic phase.
