Flame retardant effect of Magnesium Hydroxide on SAN and elastomer butadiene phase in ABS
Flame retarded ABS with Magnesium Hydroxide (MH) was prepared by means of direct incorporation of MH into ABS and by means of blending MH with elastomer butadiene then with SAN copolymer, respectively. The flame retardancy and thermal stability were investigated with limiting oxygen index test, UL-94 test, thermal oxidation test and FTIR. The heat release reactions of both SAN and elastomer butadiene in ABS with 60wt% loading of MH prepared by direct incorporation were not affected, and poor flame retardancy was obtained. However, the flame retardancy of flame retarded ABS with 60wt% loading of MH prepared by means of blending elastomeric butadiene with MH then with SAN copolymer could be significantly improved, and high LOI value and V-0 rating could be achieved due to the effect of MH on controlling the heat release reaction of both matrix phase of ABS. It is considered that both heat release reaction can be chastened, and superior flame retardancy can be achieved if the heat release reaction of elastomer butadiene phase can be controlled in flame retarded ABS with MH.
