Selecting A Scheduling Policy for Embedded Real-time Monitor and Control Systems

A typical task model, which is abstracted from an embedded realtime monitor and control system, is presented in this paper. Characteristics that are specific to this type of embedded systems are analyzed, showing how they can influence the scheduling policy. A hybrid of the rate monotonic algorithm and the sporadic server algorithm is selected as a scheduling policy for our system together with an analysis of feasibility and rationality of such a policy.An overview of the rate monotonic algorithm is presented in this paper, and a schedulability test is given incorporating such factors as context switching overhead and task synchronization that can impact the scheduling process.
