Aerogels: Chemistry and Properties
Aerogels, unique solid materials, have extremely low densities, large open pores and high inner surface area, exhibiting interesting physical properties, such as low thermal conductivity, low sound velocity combined with high optical transparency and high mechanical strength etc.The particularly interesting properties of aerogels arise from the extraordinary flexibility of the sol-gel processing, coupled with original drying techniques.Generally, all materials which can be synthesized as wet gels by sol-gel process can further be dried by the supercritical method to obtain corresponding aerogels.New properties based upon the very open texture of the aerogels make them outstanding for many applications. Thus, getting knowledge of the fundamental chemical and physical changes during the sol-gel process for aerogels synthesis is beneficial to control their micro texture and prepare aerogels with unique mechanical, optical, electronic or catalytic properties.
