Diblock fluoroacrylate Copolymers and its Self-assembly for the Conservation of Ancient Monuments

  The diblock fluoroacrylate copolymers PMMA-b-PDFHM,made of poly methyl methacrylate(PMMA)and poly dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate(PDFHM)for the conservation application,are synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP)by a brominated initiator end group termed 1H,1H,2H,2H-heptadecafluoro(F-Br).The chemical structure of PMMA-b-PDFHM is characterized by 1H-NMR,9F-NMR and GPC analysis.In order to understand the protective application behavior in the solution on ancient monuments,the self-assembly of PMMA-b-PDFHM in chloroform(CHCl3),tetrahydrofuran(THF)and trifluorotoluene(TFT)solutions is investigated using the dynamic light scattering(DLS)and the transmission electron microscopy(TEM).The properties of PMMA-b-PDFHM films are investigated for their surface wettability,surface free energy,surface elementary composition,surface morphology and roughness,and surface water adsorption through the analysis of static contact angle(SCA),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),atomic force microscope(AFM)and the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation(QCM-D).It is found that the high content of unimers is favor for obtaining low surface free energies(17.1-17.7 mN·m-1),which is attributed to the high fluorine content caused by migrating of F-Br and PDFHM onto the film surface.The surface morphology and roughness determined are strongly controlled by the cast solutions.PMMA-b-PDFHM film exhibits a low wettability and high stable surface due to a well-ordered fluorocarbon surface provided by PDFHM and F-Br groups.Therefore,PMMA-b-PDFHM is possible to develop into the high performance material in conservation application of monuments.
