Semi-active Tuned Mass Damper with Phase Control for Structural Vibration Mitigation

The present study aims at demonstrating the feasibility of semi-active phase control tuned mass damper(PC-TMD)implemented in structures for structural vibration mitigation. The semi-active friction force is applied at certain situations so that the PC-TMD moves along the design trajectory to adjust the phase of PC-TMD relative to the structure to back to the 90° phase lag. Thus, the PC-TMD can develop the maximum power flow to achieve superior structural vibration reduction.By controlling the instantaneous phase of PC-TMD,the proposed PC-TMD not only improves the control performance but also prevents the TMD power from flowing back to the main structure.Furthermore, although the PC-TMD is a damping-variable-type TMD,the detuning issue can also be mitigated through adjusting the PC-TMD motion to the right phase. The feasibility of application of the PC-TMD is verified through numerical simulations. The simulation results reveal the robustness of the PC-TMD,particularly when the PC-TMD is detuning to the structure. Therefore, the PC-TMD outperforms the conventional TMD in terms of suppressing the structural responses.
