Recent Developments in Aluminum Alloy Powders for Selective Laser Melting
In the field of metal additive manufacturing, because of high reflectivity and thermal conductivity of aluminum, only two aluminum alloys,i.e.,AlSi10Mg and AlSi12,both of which possess small freezing range, high fluidity, good weldability, and low coefficient of thermal expansion, are popularly used for selective laser melting(SLM)to produce the parts with density great than 99.5%by high-power laser. The typical tensile strengths of these alloys in both as-SLMed and as-heat treated are from 300MPa to 460MPa.To meet the requirements of weight-reduction or/and complex shape of structural parts in aerospace and transportation, more high-strength aluminum alloys suitable for SLM need to be developed. This paper reviews the recent developments in aluminum alloy powders for SLM,especially for high-strength aluminum alloy powders. These alloy powders could be produced by element blending, addition of ceramic particles and alloying methods.Among them, the SLMed samples of AlMg4.5ScZrMn alloy,AlSi10Cu3Mg alloy, etc.,possess the ultimate tensile strength above 500MPa.For these high-strength aluminum alloys,in order to replace wrought aluminum alloys, some key problems, such as high price of powders, small amount of residual micro-pores and the weak layer-cohesion in the SLMed parts, need to be solved.
