Development of A High-performance Cu-based Sintered Alloy Contact Strip

The pantograph contact strip for railway vehicles is an important sliding member which supplies electricity from the overhead wire(trolley wire)to the vehicle, and it has long been in development to reduce the wear in the contact strip and the wire.Cu-sintered alloys and carbon materials are mainly used to synthesize the contact strips of existing lines; Cu-sintered alloy contact strips are used in trains where conductivity and mechanical strength are considered important. The advantage of Cu-sintered alloy contact strips is that the wear resistance of the contact strip itself is high, but they also have the tendency to attack the wires. Therefore,we attempted to address both the improvements in wear resistance of the contact strip and in the reduction of attacking property to the wire by partially replacing the hard components in the conventional Cu-sintered alloy contact strips with a low-hardness,and high-melting point component, and switching the lubricating components to a solid lubricant with better lubricating ability than the conventional ones. Our bench test confirmed the reduction of wear in contact strip and wire compared to the conventional Cu-sintered alloy contact strips. It is noted that the results of bench test showed good consistency with those of field tests using actual vehicles.
