Preparation and Properties of Porous SiC Ceramic Membrane Supports by in Situ Reaction Bonding Technique

Porous SiC ceramic was fabricated by particle packing and in situ reaction bonding process after pressureless sintering in air at 1280-1480℃.The green body was formed by press molding using SiC coarse particles(150-180μm)as aggregate,SiC fine particles and ρ-Al2O3 powder as bonding agent, basic magnesium carbonate as sintering agent and polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)as forming adhesive, respectively. The effect of sintering temperature and ρ-Al2O3 powder addition on the properties of porous SiC ceramics was investigated. The results show that the open porosity of the samples decreases with the increase of sintering temperature and ρ-Al2O3 powder addition, but the strength increases at the first stage and then decreases. The samples with 9 wt.%ρ-Al2O3 possess the highest flexural strength after sintering at 1430℃ for 3h.The support with the flexural strength of 25.1MPa and air permeability of 372.7 m3/(m2·h·kPa)was developed by adding 9%mass of ρ-Al2O3 powder, which can meet the requirements of high-temperature filtration under normal pressure.
