High Porosity of FeAl Intermetallic Foam Prepared by Thermal Explosion Reaction
High porosity of Fe-Al intermetallic foam was prepared via thermal explosion(TE)reaction in a glass tube furnace with a heating rate of 10 ℃/min from Fe-40 at.%Al elemental powders. Results showed that the temperature of sample increased rapidly from 637 ℃ to 981 ℃ in 34 s interval, which means that an obvious TE appears in the continuous sintering process. The volume of the sample expanded significantly and exhibited an interconnected pore structure with a high open porosity of 61%.XRD patterns showed that TE product contains Fe2Al5 and Fe while final products only contains single-phase FeAl intermetallic, and EDS results showed that Fe and Al distributed evenly in the final products.
