Cobalt Based Alloy Cladding by Conform CladTM Technology
Cobalt based alloy cladding has been widely used in many industries involving multiple modes of failure due to abrasion,metal-on-metal wear, erosion, corrosion, impact and high temperature. This paper compares the properties of cobalt based alloy cladding given by Kennametal Conforma CladTM(CCl)technology(using flexible cloth and slurry-based UltraflexTM)and plasma transferred arc welding(PTA).The results show that the cobalt based alloy cladding given by the CCl technology provides improved abrasion, erosion and corrosion properties owing to the unique powder metallurgy microstructure. The CCl process is extremely flexible. The high-quality cobalt based alloy cladding can be applied not only to the areas accessible by hands, but also to the complex geometry and the areas impossible to apply with the other traditional welding,PTA,laser cladding and thermal spray.Such areas include small and/or long internal diameters,non-line-of-sight,screens,and pump components etc.The CCl process also gives superior as-clad surface finish for the cobalt alloy cladding. In addition, the CCl technology can be used for cladding high-hardness alloys, like Stellite 720,which is difficult to deposit by the welding process. The thickness of cobalt alloy cladding can well be controlled from 100 microns to millimeters dependent on the applications.
