Microstructure and Wear Resistance of Nano Titanium Dioxide Strengthening Hardfacing Material

The hardfacing materials for cold roll repair were developed with the additions of nano-TiO2.In order to ensure its uniform distribution in the deposited material, the nano-TiO2 powders were coated on the surface of pure ferrous particles, and then the coated particles were mixed with other alloy powders to prepare alloy filler. The effect of nano-TiO2 additive on microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated. The results showed that the microstructure of hardfacing mainly consists of niobium carbide and fine lath martensite.By the thermodynamic calculations,it is found that TiO2 was transformed to Ti3O5 at about 1660℃ and then transformed to Ti2O3 and MnTi2O4 at around 600℃ and 550℃ respectively. With the increase of nano-TiO2,the precipitations of hardfacing become more complex. The precipitations in hardfacing are heterogeneously composed of Ti-Mn-Nb-Si-O-S,Mn-Si-O and Mn-S phase according to the results of TEM.The maximum hardness of hardfacing alloys was 56.4HRC when the content of nano-TiO2 is 0.6wt%.In addition, the main wear mechanisms of hardfacing without nano additives was abrasive and adhesive wear, however, wear mechanisms changed to brasion wear when nano-TiO2 content is 0.2wt%.
