Improved Processing and Handling of Sintered Soft Magnetic Materials

Sintered soft magnetic materials are commonly used in the powder metallurgy(PM)industry in low frequency applications due to their combination of excellent magnetic properties and high flexibility in part design.MPIF standard materials such as FF-0000,FY-4500,and FS-0300 are often chosen for a given application depending on the necessary part magnetic requirements and acceptable material costs. While materials containing phosphorus and silicon provide advantages in terms of magnetic properties, compaction can be difficult due to the abrasive additives required, and proper handling and sintering required to maintain optimal performance of the material. In this paper, methods of powder enhancement are reviewed to reduce part scoring, extend tool life, and improve overall compaction. Also discussed in this study are the magnetic properties of each of the various sintered magnetic material options and the potential degradation that can be observed if proper handling procedures are not followed.
