Mechanism of Interaction between Sm-Co Magnets and Glass Coatings Doped with Mixed Adherent Oxides
To protect Sm-Co magnets against oxidation in air at elevated temperatures, many efforts were made.In this work, borosilicate glass coatings containing mixed adherent oxides have been prepared on Sm-Co magnet substrates by brush painting and then were fired at 830℃ for 3min followed by furnace cooling in argon atmosphere. The composition and microstructure near interface were analyzed by using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. The results show that all glass coatings have good adherence with the substrates.Glass coatings reacted chemically with magnet substrates evidenced by the precipitated reaction products. The precipitated products profiles in different locations from the glass/magnet interface were detected.Oxygen releasing from redox reactions penetrated into Sm-Co magnet substrates to form micro-sized oxygen affected zone.Special orientation of oxides particles and copper segregations at different interfaces were found. The redox reaction and diffusion mechanisms between glass and Sm-Co magnet were discussed in detail.
