Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Carbides Prepared by Selective Laser Melting(SLM)

  Selective laser melting(SLM)is a widely used additive manufacturing process for many metals and alloys.The use of SLM to manufacture cemented carbide,however,has quite limited investigation.In this study,the effect of the properties of initial carbide pellets on the microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated for SLM processed carbides.A relative density of more than 96%was achieved for WC-17Co carbide.Hardness testing were made to SLM processed carbides in this study.The SLM process employed in this investigation resulted in inhomogeneous and fast WC grain growth.During the SLM process,the temperature distribution was non-uniform,which is believed to be the main reason causing the inhomogeneous WC grain size.
