Process Optimization and Mechanical Properties of 18Ni Maraging Steel Fabricated by Selective Laser Melting

A selective laser melting(SLM)method was used to fabricate 18Ni maraging steel and the SLM process parameters and solution treatment/aging conditions were optimized.A process map showing the relationship between main process parameters and quality of the SLMed products has been constructed, resulting in an elaborate processing window where sound products with high density and good surface quality can be obtained. The as-built specimens in the optimized region showed higher strength and hardness than wrought maraging steel due to fine columnar and/or dendritic microstructure formed during rapid cooling in the SLM process. When the as-built specimens were subjected to solution treatment at 820 ℃ for 1 h and aging at 460 ℃ for 5 h,the hardness, tensile strength, and Youngs modulus tremendously increased, while ductility and impact energy drastically reduced. The significant enhancement in tensile strength and hardness is due to precipitation of fine intermetallic compounds in the martensite matrix during aging process. Moreover, the SLMed specimens with the building direction parallel to the loading direction had a slightly lower tensile strength and much lower elongation than those with the building direction perpendicular to the loading direction.
