Effect of Graphite Type on Processability and Performance of Sintered Brake Pads

Sintered brake pads are produced by mixing metal powders(typically copper)with graphite powders, followed by compression molding and sintering.Due to spring-back effect, cracks in the brake pads can occur after pressing(green part)or after sintering(sintered part). It is known that graphite can affect the spring-back of sintered brake pads. However, only few systematic studies of this phenomena have been published so far.In this paper well present a detailed study on the effect of graphite type(natural graphite, synthetic graphite)and graphite particle size distribution(PSD)on processing and performance of sintered brake pads. Thanks to the new understanding about the role of graphite on processing and performance of sintered brake pads, well be able to give guidelines on the selection the most suitable graphite grades with focus on minimizing spring back issue and scrap rate during production while keeping good braking performance. The results of this study are relevant for various applications like brake pads for motorbikes,high-speed trains and wind mills.
