Application of the Powder Metallurgy Process in Production of Cathodes for Deposition of High-temperature Thermal-barrier Coatings(TBCs)on Gas Turbine Blades
Results of comparative evaluation of production processes for the manufacture of cathodes for the deposition of thermal barrier coatings by physical vapour deposition on gas turbine blades have been presented in the article. The cathodes were produced by conventional casting process and by powder metallurgy, which incorporated hot isostatic pressing of steel containers filled with Ni-Cr-Al-Y Micro-melt alloy. It was established that use of the powder metallurgy route,in comparison with the traditional casting process allows for a dense,non-porous structure, featuring homogenously distributed fine structural constituents within the cathode volume.Using the cathodes, protective coatings have been deposited on high-pressure turbine blades. It was found that the coatings deposited on the turbine blades using the PM cathode,as compared with the conventional cast cathode, contain less amount of droplet deposits, which results in better surface finish of the turbine blades.
