The Better Braking Behavior of Copper Matrix Brake Pads with Addition of Fe Content

The Cu matrix brake pads applied in high railway was produced by powder metallurgy method. The influence of Fe content on the friction and wear properties was studied by MM 3000 friction and wear tester. The results indicated that the wear loss can reduce about 33%as the Fe content rise from 20%to 30%.Considering the friction coefficient and wear loss, the Cu-based brake pads containing 22%Fe perform best. The friction coefficient maintains a high value(around 0.4)when the brake speed is less than 200 km/h.Even when brake speed reaches 350km/h,the friction coefficient is about 0.36.The main reason of this variation is the effect of Fe as the asperity at low braking speed and the Fe can be oxidized on the contact surface due to the high braking energy when the brake speeds rise.Besides, the total wear loss is about 0.11cm3MJ-1.That is excellent performance compared with the TJ/CL 307–2014(friction coefficient is beyond 0.35,wear loss is less than 0.35 cm3MJ-1).
