Property of Sintered Rolling Carburized Gear without Grinding

  In order to increase the number of powder metal applications in automobiles,some investigations were carried out to ascertain whether powder metal parts can be applied to transmission gears which require high fatigue strength.Currently,wrought steel gears are used,which require a lot of processing steps.Our previous study has suggested that surface-rolled sintered gears applied for 0.5Ni-1.0Mo pre-alloy steel powder with over 7.4 g/cm3 of density could achieve equivalent fatigue strength to wrought steel gears.It is important to clarify the benefits of applying sintered gears to automobile transmission.Generally,grinding costs have the highest ratio among the manufacturing costs of transmission gears.In this study,the property of a surface-rolled sintered gear without grinding is discussed.The rolling condition is considered in order to improve tooth profile.As a result of the investigation,a surface-rolled sintered gear without grinding could achieve equivalent surface durability to surface-rolled and ground sintered gear by means of optimizing the rolling condition.This study suggested that there is some possibility of eliminating the grinding process on surface-rolled sintered gear.
