A Case Study for Light Weight Structural Powder Metal Solution:10 Speed Automatic Transmission Planetary Carrier
Cast Aluminum was considered as an alternative for the Rear(Direct Overdrive)Planetary Carrier of the newly designed 10 speed automatic transmission.Stackpole International(SI)and Ford engineering teams collaborated on the design and introduced this compact ferrous powder metal design as an option demonstrating the superior strength,improved stiffness,without a weight penalty.All intended design features and functionality as a planetary carrier and clutch hub combination were included in the design,simulation and bench tests.A methodical approach to generating data that complements the existing body of knowledge enabled fast and accurate characterization.Results showed that a light weight PM design can successfully compete with Aluminium.
