Latest Trends and Developments in Powder Metal Components and Processes

The Powder Metallurgy Industry has enjoyed a steady growth over the past several decades, mostly due to expanding new applications within the Automotive Industry.Parts Manufacturers,Material Suppliers and Automotive Engineers have been producing a continuous stream of new components for P/M.One of the main advantages of P/M is the possibility of using a wide array of materials with diverse composition tailored for specific applications, which makes this process unique. Also, the possibility of attaining near-net-shape in one stroke with ever improving accuracy has been a plus.Since inception,P/M parts have thrived by overcoming challenges with regards to material properties, equipment and process limitations, limited availability of technological resources and competitive cost environment. In this era of downsizing and electrification of the automobile, the P/M Industry is venturing into an even more uncharted territory and will have to find even more novel and creative ways to utilize the latest technology and innovation with no guarantee it will always lead to success. However, the can-do entrepreneurial spirit of the P/M Industry can be counted on to rise to the occasion, embrace the risk and prevail because of the potential rewards that are still out there in the horizon.Key achievements leading to recent successful product developments are in the areas of high temperature sinter hardening,sinter-brazing of planetary carriers, hot forging of high density helical gears, optimization of oil quenching and mar-quench sizing to minimize distortion and improve accuracy, selective hardening by induction and laser, leaner alloy development to wean away from scarce and expensive raw materials like nickel and molybdenum, development of machinability additives and green machining to improve machining tool life, precision machining using CNC machining centers, soft magnetic materials, plant wide automation using new concepts like Internet of Things(IoT),NDT auto-inspection and AI.Moreover, shapes are becoming ever more complicated as the automotive designers are adding more features and combining parts requiring the use of CNC presses and sinter-brazing technologies. The P/M supply base must adjust to global manufacturing in the automotive sector by integrating technology, manufacturing and quality among various global divisions to be able to respond to any rapid change associated with new developments and also to standardize the best practices in manufacturing and quality.
