Failure Analysis of Bolts in Pumped Storage Power Station

  The top bolt of pumped storage power station plays a vital role in the safe operation of the unit.The 35CrMo bolt with quenched and tempered state has been fractured in a pumped storage power station,the fracture causes of bolts were analyzed by means of metallographic microscope,scanning electron microscope and tensile test,et.al.The results showed that,the bolt has a 3mm deep fatigue crack before the last instable fracture.The large stress action and the tip stress concentration formed by the fatigue crack are the reasons for the rapid instability fracture of the bolt.The fatigue crack of the bolt begins at the root of the thread,the large stress action beyond the fatigue limit of the material and the machining defect on the thread surface are the causes of the fatigue cracking of the bolt from the root of the thread.
